He told me that it's difficult to record swimming times in Excel.

The data comes in as text (I presume, since its on the left side of the cell), I need the data to be number, so I can use it in calculations. See attached spreadsheet for example (you need thinkorswim to get the function to work). Excel already allows you to define custom functions, but only by writing them in an entirely different language such as JavaScript. In contrast, LAMBDA allows you to define a custom function in Excel's own formula language. Moreover, one function can call another, so there is no limit to the power you can deploy with a single function call. The other mode is called 1904 Date System and is used for compatibility with Excel 2008 for Mac and earlier Mac versions. You can change the date system in the Advanced Options. In the 1904 date system dates are calculated using 1st January 1904 as the starting point. I use the RTD function in Excel and the cell that is being imported from the Stock Broker website (Think or Swim; TD Ameritrade) is bringing in a cell that shows an expected move of a stock. The Execl spreadsheet cell is importing a '+/-' signs in front of a number which is imported using the RTD function. RTD is much more robust and flexible than DDE. For instance, with DDE you need to 'hard-code' symbols and field names in your spreadsheet formulas. The Hoadley Finance Add-in for Excel on the other hand does not require the 'hard coding' of symbols and field names in formulas.
